Top Five Questions to Ask Your Doctor

Picture
Asking for clarification is so important. These questions will help you to get the most information from your provider, if you’re interested in minimizing your use of medications. You’ll be able to take concise notes and gain a better understanding of the cause of your condition. You’ll also be able to make comparisons for the cost of your care.

  1. What is the cause of my disease or condition, and is it reversible?
  2. Will additional tests be necessary or helpful?
  3. What are my options for my best treatment? Are there alternative treatments that I should know about?
  4. What lifestyle changes can I make that will accelerate my improvement?
  5. What is the cost of today’s visit?

Knowing your diagnosis and treatment options will allow you to do your own research and learn details that your provider may not have had time to explain fully. If you ask good questions, you’ll be better prepared and empowered to initiate your own healing plan.

Hi Dr. Lori,

This is a really nice website with some very engaging content. I think it's amazing that you are sharing your medical knowledge with others. I really value the tips you share in this post. Here's my issue. When I ask my Dr these questions, it almost feels like she doesn't have the answer. I get a really drawn out dance around the question that always leaves me more confused than before. I actually have an appointment tomorrow with her. What would be your advice on getting my dr. to listen? I want to try switching my medication from Levothyroxine to Nature's Throid for several reasons. She seems to think there is no reason because my TSH is "in range" and we shouldn't change anything. I know that I function better when my TSH is on the lower end of "normal range" than on the higher end, but again she's not even acknowledging these concerns. I have hashi and take a125ug of levo per day. Perhaps it's time to find a new endocrinologist? I just hate having to start over. Your thoughts?
